According to the NPD Group, Nintendo sold 235,000 3DS units in the U.S. in August, pushing the system into second place in the charts for dedicated game systems. Approximately 185,000 of these units were sold following August 12's price drop, representing an increase of more than 260% over the equivalent 19 day period the previous month.
"Consumers are responding very positively to the new suggested retail price of $169.99 for the Nintendo 3DS," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive VP of sales and marketing. "With Star Fox 64 3D and the new Flame Red color launching [today], and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 arriving later this year, Nintendo 3DS will offer consumers cutting-edge entertainment and tremendous value this holiday season."
The big question, however, is "will this continue?" Following recent news of a second "Circle Pad" analog stick addon to release alongside Monster Hunter 3G, speculation is rife that Nintendo is set to release a new model 3DS ready-equipped with dual analogs following their event on September 13. If a new 3DS is announced, it's likely that these sales figures will plummet down to a new low as prospective users hang tight for the new model rather than struggle on with the spectacularly ugly and cumbersome "Expansion Slide Pad" peripheral.
