EDF powers up ten-year data centre deal

Atos signed up for £100m

EDF Energy has signed a ten year £100 million data centre services contract for its UK business.

The Atos deal, which is now unusual given its decade long duration, involves consolidating EDF Energy's data centre infrastructure to cut costs by 20 percent over the life of the contract. Over 100 employees from EDF Energy are transferring to Atos as part of the move but will continue to be based at EDF locations, said the utlity firm.

Nigel Pettifer, EDF Energy head of data centres, said the company had selected Atos after a 12 month procurement process. He said: "The new solution will enable us to run our business more cost effectively while improving the resilience and flexibility of our IT infrastructure."

Under the contract, Atos will provide EDF Energy with additional data centre capacity to meet increased demand, whilst also "enabling its services to be flexed up or down according to requirements", said Atos.

Atos will rationalise existing data centre facilities and introduce services from its own global network of data centres, as well as implement new technology to improve data centre resilience.

In other EDF news, last year the company's head of nuclear security in France was jailed and the firm fined 1.5 million euros (£1.3 million) after being found guilty of spying on environmental campaigners Greenpeace using Trojan malware. EDF runs 58 nuclear power stations in France and 8 in the UK.
