UK businesses beat recession with tech investments

30% of firms say technology has saved them money

Over two thirds of small businesses that continued to invest in new technology have been least impacted by the recession, says BT Business.

The findings of the ISP's 2009 Business Pulse report, which are being launched coincide with Small Business Week 2009, revealed that 30 percent of UK businesses claim technology has saved them money while 28 said they had found more customers through employing technology.

Nearly two thirds said faster broadband speeds have had a positive impact on their business. Furthermore one in 10 small businesses said they were seeking more advice and support on using technology to manage their business.

BT also said that 20 percent of UK businesses are to support forums, Twitter and blogs to market their business and attract and retain customers. Last year social media hardly featured on small businesses' agenda.

Mick Hegarty, strategy director at BT Business, said: "The small business community has fought bravely to survive the downturn".

"We can also see that now more than ever technology has a critical role to play in the future success of these businesses, helping them to find new customers, market themselves more effectively and reduce costs. Investing in better technology is emerging as a measure of success in the future for many businesses."
