Cable & Wireless join forces with Orange

National roaming for UK VoIP customers

Cable & Wireless has joined forces with mobile operator Orange to offer its fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) customers access to national roaming.

Under the new partnership, FMC users will be able to make calls over an IP network when indoors and a mobile network when on the move.

Keith Greenfield, director of wholesale at Orange said: "Orange has one of the most robust and comprehensive networks in the UK, covering more than 99 percent of the population and we’re always looking to partner with companies who will benefit from the solutions we can provide."

The Cable & Wireless FMC system will use the low-power GSM spectrum for indoor coverage. In an interview with ZDNet.co.uk, a Cable & Wireless spokesman said that it offers more reliable performance and security than Wi-Fi because the spectrum is licensed.
