British businesses lead Europe on IT risk

Survey: UK firms 'well prepared for key IT risks'

British businesses are taking a lead on IT risks, according to a Grant Thornton survey which says eight out of 10 British firms already have formal documentation in place to protect themselves against disaster.

According to a survey, which covers 32 countries, more than three quarters - 77 percent - of UK businesses have the documentation in place to prepare for a major IT failure or disaster recovery scenario - well ahead of the survey's EU average of 57 percent and a global average of 61 percent.

And UK companies were again ahead of the global average when it came to data security, with 81 percent claiming to have a plan in place to handle an information breach - against a global average of 74 percent.

Alysoun Stewart, head at Grant Thornton's Strategic Services group, said it was encouraging to see UK businesses apparently taking risk management seriously.

"Identifying fundamental risks and taking steps to prepare for them is essential for minimizing the impact of a disaster, which is key to the continuity of privately held businesses," she said.
