PowerPoint overtakes Word in hack threat

Microsoft's presentation tool is top hacker target

More hackers attack PowerPoint than Microsoft Word, according to a report from MessageLabs.

This is the first time that Microsoft Word has been overtaken by PowerPoint, and one specific IP address in Taiwan has been singled out as the main culprit for the attacks.

The research also found that specific employees in companies are being targeted by hackers. Instead of sending mass emails to break into people's PCs, hackers are pinpointing individuals in focused attacks.

In March 2006 just a few single-target attacks were spotted per day. But the number surged in March 2007, when MessageLabs discovered 249 targeted attacks aimed at 216 organisations, 200 of which had been hacked using a single email.
