Porn king gets life sentence

China ups efforts to clamp down on net porn

Chinese authorities have maintained their tough stance on net porn by jailing the man behind the country’s most popular pornographic website for life.

According to reports in China, porn peddler Chen Hui was tracked down after a hospital homepage was changed into a porn site. Previously, Chen had evaded authorities by regularly changing the website’s domain name and servers.

As well as the long-term sentence for Chen Hui, authorities jailed eight other people behind the site, with sentences ranging from 13 months to 10 years.

Until it was shut down last year, Chen Hui’s site attracted in excess of 600,000 members, each paying up to 266 yuan (£17). Chinese officials said there were over 9 million pornographic images on the site, which was set up in 2005 and had attracted more than 11 million hits.

China has historically strictly forbidden pornography, but has taken a more lenient stance in recent years. However, the recent crackdown follows an initiative announced in July to tackle illegal pornography and software pirates.
