Survey: Asian firms find network security tech ineffective

Web traffic security is a major concern among businesses in Asia Pacific, according to the findings of a new Ponemon Institute report.

Commissioned by Juniper, the study surveyed 2,054 IT and IT security professionals in Asia Pacific. Results reveal that 64% of respondents in Australia and India consider web traffic security a top concern while 61% of Japanese respondents and 59% of Chinese respondents report the same.

In addition, 47% of respondents agreed that emerging network security technologies aren't effective in minimizing attacks that are aimed to bring down web applications or block unwarranted Internet traffic.

Despite the rise of external attacks that calls for a comprehensive security technology investment, the study finds that 55% of the IT executives prioritized point solutions over a holistic approach.

Organizations also recognize the need to attract competent and skilled security professionals, as 52% of them believe that emerging network security technologies used by their organizations depend upon in-house personnel who possess knowledge and expertise to operate them effectively.

"Despite being armed with emerging network security technologies, organizations in Asia Pacific find themselves to be sitting ducks for external threat," said Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder at Ponemon Institute. "Organizations need to reflect on the shortcomings of their existing inside-out approach and seriously consider investing in a more comprehensive and holistic approach to network security in order to keep pace with a constantly evolving threat landscape."
