Trend Micro talks online safety at Melbourne school

Students at Birralee Primary School recently had the opportunity to learn about the importance of staying safe online.

The Melbourne school had a visit from Trend Micro's Cyber Safety Squad, led by the security vendor's safety expert, Aman Chand.

With more and more people getting online thanks to smartphones, Chand spoke to the students about the importance of staying safe online.

"Ït is crucial that the awareness process begins with the children, so that they understand when and when-not-to reveal personal information through their social networking channels," he said.

Chand adds the children's vulnerability within the cyber world has gone up with the growing accessibility to a range of connected devices.

"The increasing accessibility, outside of parental supervision, is resulting in parents finding it more difficult to control and understand what their children are accessing," he said.

To illustrate his point, Chand said an average Australian household have 5.7 connected devices.

Recent research by Trend Micro has found that 71 per cent of parents are concerned about what their children are doing online but 29 per cent do not monitor their children's social media profile to ensure their safety.

Chand says the Birralee Primary School event was not only to educate the children on the importance of staying safe online, but to demonstrate to parents useful methods of parental control.
