Antivirus founder John McAfee sought after neighbour murdered

Expat millionaire denies involvement

After a year that has seen his Belize home raided by police, wealthy McAfee antivirus founder and notable John McAfee is being sought for questioning by local police over the murder of a neighbour last weekend.

McAfee's neighbour, fellow-US citizen Gregory Viant Faull, 52, was reportedly found shot in the head on Sunday.

McAfee's whereabouts remain unknown - some say he is "on the run" in a way that pre-judges his involvement - but he has given an interview to one source in which he denied any involvement in the killing.

"I thought maybe they were coming for me. They [the killers] mistook him for me. They got the wrong house. They killed him. It spooked me out," he told Wired magazine by telephone.

On this basis, McAfee has disappeared because he believes he too will be targeted.

The local Gang Suppression Unit has not accused McAfee of direct involvement in the death although media reports suggest the two men were not on the best of terms after a dispute over McAfee's dogs.

"He is a person of interest at this time," Belize GSU head Marco Vidal was quoted as saying by Reuters. As to whether he was a suspect, "At this point, no. Our job [] is to get all the evidence beyond reasonable doubt that Mr A is the one that killed Mr B," he added.

It has been a bad year for McAfee who got into an angry stand-off with local police in May after a drug and weapons raid by the same GSU on his premises that left one of his dogs dead.

McAfee and some of his employees were arrested and held for some hours before being released. The antivirus founder later blamed his unwillingness to donate to political parties for his unpopularity.

Despite his name association with McAfee (now owned by Intel), the 67 year-old's connection to the firm ended as long ago as 1997. He moved to Belize in 2008, some alleged to avoid legal issues in the US.
