Major news site distributing malware

Report: IndiaNews exposing online readers

One of India's largest news websites - IndiaTimes – exposed vistors to malware, according to ScanSafe.

ScanSafe researcher Mary Landesman reported the problem on her blog last week, but said a representative for IndiaTimes – the online news site of the Times Group – claimed the problem would not be resolved until today.

"Unfortunately, the person we spoke with indicated that it was a holiday in India and they would be unlikely to fix the problem until Monday," she said.

Most of India was on holiday from Thursday because of the Diwali festival. The IndiaTimes was however updated through the week. It is not clear at this point whether the site still contains malware.

IndiaTimes, a part of Times Internet in Gurgaon, was not available for comment this morning.

ScanSafe first detected and blocked malware on the site on October 25. ScanSafe is still investigating the reach of this attack, but given the popularity of the site and the amount of malware involved, the company is urging caution, it said in its advisory on Friday. Only certain pages of the Indiatimes.com are infected, the advisory added.

In September, the site of the Bank of India, a large Indian bank in Mumbai, was hacked into and was dispensing malicious code. The bank site had to be brought down before the malware could be removed.
