Norton 360 v3 adds website ratings service

New security suite boasts faster performance

Symantec has launched a new version of its all-in-one security suite - Norton 360 version 3.0 - adding a number of new features, such as a service designed to stop web surfers visiting dangerous sites.

Norton Safe Web is an internet ratings service which analyses websites to see if they pose a threat to customers' computers. Symantec said the tool warns web surfers of dodgy sites before they view them, potentially protecting PCs from malicious code.

The company claimed 60 percent of the unsafe websites identified by Norton Safe Web were found to contain threats that can infect PCs without requiring users to download or install files.

As well as relying on servers to crawl websites en masse, Norton Safe Web draws on the experiences of the 20 million members of its Norton Community Watch network to establish which sites are likely to host dangerous code.

Symantec claims that Norton 360 v3, which runs the Norton Internet Security 2009 antimalware engine, also includes performance improvements over its predecessor. The security vendor claims the suite boasts an average install of approximately one minute, and uses less than 10MB of memory.

Other features include Smart Startup Manager, which switches off nuisance programs that launch as soon as a PC boots up; Norton Identity Safe, which stores usernames and passwords customers' use online; and Norton Backup Drive.

Norton 360 v3.0 will be available on March 19 via retailers and Symantec's online store for £59.99. The standard edition includes 2GB of online storage, although a premium version offering 25GB of storage will be available for £69.99.

To coincide with Norton 360 v3.0's release, Symantec has launched a new online forum designed to allow users and employees to discuss PC security issues, and learn how to use various Norton features.

First launched as a beta in April 2008, the Norton Users Forum adds 1,200 new users and generates over 7,000 posts each month, Symantec said.
