UK kids most at risk from online dangers

British children use web more than Europeans

British kids are more at risk from sexual predators and other web dangers than their European counterparts, says the London School of Economics.

The university surveyed over 7,000 children from 21 European countries as part of a EU-funded study of children's internet habits. The research revealed that one in four UK children had been subject to unwanted sexual comments online compared to one in ten in Ireland and Germany.

The survey also identified that children in the UK use the internet more than those in other European countries and first logged on earlier than children in other nations, at an average age of six.

However, according to Dr Leslie Haddon, who helped compile the 'Comparing Children's Online Opportunities and Risks across Europe' report, using the web more does not make children better at avoiding risk.

"Our study has found that greater use of the internet results in more exposure to risk. It's not the case, as some have assumed, that the more experienced you are online the more easy you find it to avoid risks," said Haddon
