UK spam quadruples in three months

Users get 30,846 spam emails each quarter

The number of spam messages received in the UK has quadrupled over the past three months, says ClearMyMail.

According to the software company's latest figures, on average 30,846 spam emails per user was blocked in the second quarter of the year compared to just 8,156 spam emails per user in Q1. The research also revealed that the Royal Bank of Scotland was the company most popular with hackers launching phishing scams, while of the emails received by consumers who use Orange as their ISP, some 96 percent was spam.

Dan Field, managing director of ClearMyMail told Silicon.com: "Spamming is now done by organised crime using local gangs who know how to target customers and how to make their spam look legitimate. The type of emails are now more dangerous. There are now more fraud emails rather than just spam offering you Viagra."
