Quark to limit QuarkXPress upgrades to one version back

Quark is putting the pressure on owners of older versions of QuarkXPress to upgrade. It has announced in an email to customers that from July 1, owners of some previous versions of QuarkXPress will no longer get a discount when upgrading to the latest versions.

Currently, owners of QuarkXpress 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 can upgrade to version 9 for £299 - and will receive the forthcoming QuarkXpress 10 for free when it ships in August. QuarkXPress 9 costs £799, and if you but it now you'll also get 10 for free in August.

After July 1, only owners of version 8 can get an upgrade to v9 for £299 (and then to 10 for free) - and after 10 ships, only v9 owners will get the upgrade price.

Not-so-open import

Quark has also said that the forthcoming QuarkXPress 10 will only be able to open layouts created in version 7 or later. If you want to work with documents from older versions, you'll need to use version 7, 8 or 9 as an intermediate step (Quark says you'll need version 9 for this, but this is in an email trying to sell designers the currently newest version).
