Canon launches 'world's smallest' digital SLR, the EOS 100D

Canon has added two new 'entry-level' digital SLRs: the EOS 100D and the EOS 700D.

The company claims that the EOS 100D is the smallest and lightest APS-C digital SLR ever made - and is compact enough to take everywhere. It measures 116.8 x 90.7 x 69.4mm and weighs 407g

The optical viewfinder is complemented with a 3.0-inch ClearView II Capacitive Touch screen to make adjusting settings easier.

At the EOS 100D's heart is a new 18-megapixel APS-C Hybrid CMOS AF II sensor. The new sensor uses phase detection pixels spread across 80 per cent of the sensor's imaging surface, which Canon says provide increased AF speed and tracking performance when the camera is in live view or when capturing Full-HD movies. It can capture shots at speeds of up to 4fps.

The EOS 100D is known as the EOS Rebel SL1 in the US and the EOS Kiss X7 in Japan, using the usual 'Rebel' and 'Kiss' that Canon uses in those countries for no real reason.

The EOS 700D

The EOS 700D is powered by a 18.0mp APS-C Hybrid CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5 image processor. It offers up to 5fps shooting and a native 100-12,800 ISO range.

The EOS 700D's advanced AF System consists of 9 cross-type points spread across the frame, which Canon says delivers greater focussing speed and accuracy to ensure photographers can always keep desired subjects in focus, even as they move around. Photographers can manually select and adjust focus points, or simply use full automatic mode.

The EOS 700D features a new, simplified 360 rotating mode dial to provide swift access to the camera's various shooting modes. There's also a 3.0-inch Vari-angle Clear View LCD II touch screen

Canon has also launched a new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, which it says is the perfect lens for EOS 700D and EOS 100D. It features a 4-stop Optical Image Stabilizer, which also lets photographers use lower ISO levels and longer shutter speeds. The full time manual focus ring allows users to make precise focus adjustments, while the near-silent STM technology also ensures noise is kept to a minimum whilst focusing.

The EOS 100D costs £483 plus VAT for the body only and £591 plus VAT with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens. The EOS 700D costs £525 plus VAT for the body only and £633 plus VAT with that lens,
