Blackmagic Design launches Thunderbolt video capture box

Blackmagic Design has announced Intensity Extreme at the IBC show in Amsterdam, a new low-cost video capture and playback device. The company has also released DaVinci Resolve 8.1, which also sees the debut of a Windows version of the colour grading system.

The Intensity Extreme features HDMI and analog video I/O, connects to recent Mac models using the new Thunderbolt connection, and costs 209 (around £180).

Blackmagic says that Intensity Extreme is completely powered from the Thunderbolt connection on the computer, saying that this means Intensity Extreme is the perfect solution for adding video to laptop computers as it powers from the laptop battery. It features a chassis machined out of a solid block of aircraft grade aluminum.

Intensity Extreme can capture directly from an HD camera's image sensor, bypassing the video compression chip for true uncompressed video quality. It can be connected to any big screen television or video projector for edit monitoring.

Intensity Extreme switches between 1080 HD, 720 HD, NTSC and PAL video. It's fully compatible with Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects and Photoshop, abd Apple Final Cut Pro 7 (though, notably, not Final Cut Pro X).

The new Resolve 8.1 software update includes new layer node composite effects, ACES colorspace support, compatibility for Avid AAF and round trip with Avid Media Composer, Final Cut Pro 7 clip size and position support, new copy commands for grades, upgraded EDL features, support for UltraStudio 3D for Thunderbolt and compatibility with the 2011 MacBook Pro 15" computer.
