Microsoft Zune HD launches in the US

But will new Zune make it to the UK?

Microsoft has launched the Microsoft Zune HD portable music player... in the US, at least.

The Zune HD has a touchscreen, and comes in 16GB and 32GB models. It has wireless internet capabilities and, like the new Apple iPod nano, an FM radio tuner.

The 16GB and 32GB Microsoft Zune HDs cost $219.99 (£133) and $289.99 (£176) respectively, making the Zune HD cheaper than the equivalent iPod: the Apple iPod touch.

The original Microsoft Zune was a flop, but Microsoft is hoping that its Apple-like content delivery will make the new player much more popular. The the new Zune Marketplace online store will allow Zune HD users to purchase HD movies. There'll also be an online music streaming service.

The Zune video player will be launched around the world later this year, but as to whether the Zune HD will make it to these shores, Microsoft is remaining tight-lipped. The original Zune was never released in the UK.

Microsoft's Enrique Rodriguez said that the Zune HD: "Lets consumers connect to their music, TV shows and movie content and enjoy it on the three screens they use every day."
