Curved LCD screen on show at displays event

AU Optronics panel could be used in dashboards

The world's first curved TFT LCD screen on a glass substrate is on show at the at the Society for Information Display (SID) exhibition in Los Angeles this week.

AU Optronics Curved Display has a curved radius of 100mm and uses a special thinning technology and a curved backlight, the company said, noting future applications of this type of display could include automobile dashboard displays and watches.

AU Optronics did not say when the Curved Display technology will be commercially available.

Besides the Curved Display, AU Optronics plans to show off several other advances at the show, including an LCD screen for mobile phones that is 0.63mm thick. That makes the display the thinnest available, AU Optronics said, and will allow mobile phone makers to design sleeker handsets.
