Comics turn Sony PSP into e-book reader

Read Spider-Man and Star Wars on PSP

At a GamesCom press conference in Cologne yesterday, Sony announced that a brand new digital reader will be released on the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) this December.

Users will be able to download and read comics on the portable console. While there aren't many details on the reader's content, it was announced that comic book conglomerate Marvel will be releasing digital comic books for this new service.

Marvel publishes a large number of comics including Spider-Man, X-Men and the Fantastic Four.

Games downloads and reviews

Marvel's VP of Digital Global Marketing Ira Rubenstein took the stage at GamesCom for this exciting announcement, promising "hundreds" of Marvel comics will come to Sony's new service.

It was also announced that IDW Publishing - Star Trek, GI Joe and Transformers - will be a content partner for Sony's PSP platform.

Since the release the Amazon Kindle, the e-book reader space has become a key battleground for digital media publishers.
