LaCie has once again commissioned designer Philippe Starck to create an unusually-shaped storage system. The new Blade Runner isn't based on Douglas Trumbull's iconic designs for Ridley Scott's film, but instead "by the mysterious, incredible power of information technology". Apparently it "begs the question; can we truly confine technology to a cage?".
Yeah, whatever. In reality, the Blade Runner is a 4TB hard drive with an unusual, pleasing design that's a much about keeping the temperature down as looking good.
"In my design nothing is useless - style, symbolism or functionality," says Philippe Starck. "In the Blade Runner, the warm interior electronics are encased in a mystifying shell, and the blades are the radiator that cools it down. The suspension gives space for air to circulate around the hard drive, and the metal material increases the temperature conduction."
The durable exterior shields the hard drive from overheating. The LaCie Blade Runner also features an LED power button in the form of Starck's signature symbol that glows to indicate activity. It connects to your computer via USB 3.0.
The Blade Runner costs £199.99. Only 9,999 have been produced.
