LG using ZigBee wireless in the home

HomNet to use Ember's ZigBee chip

LG Electronics will use ZigBee wireless technology from Ember Corp in LG's HomNet system for controlling home energy efficiency, security, appliances and other devices.

LG will integrate Ember's EM250 ZigBee chip into the LG HomNet system to provide a variety of digital living functions, such as the ability to control appliances, manage utility use and provide security, the companies said.

LG connects household systems through its own Living Network Control Protocol but also deploys Zigbee, Bluetooth and other network standards. The home controls come in a variety of interfaces, such as mobile phones, TVs and computers, the companies said.

ZigBee is a standards-based radio communications technology. The standard, 802.15.4, uses the 2.4GHz band and is designed to provide low-power transmissions. The companies did not release a timeline for the product, or pricing.

Other device manufacturers have deployed Ember's ZigBee products, including Control 4 in Salt Lake City. SK Telekom in South Korea offers home networking controls as part of a service that relies on Ember's EM250.
