NBN contractors required to take asbestos training

Telstra has reviewed a number of requirements for its NBN contractors and subcontractors to improve asbestos handling in its cement pits. The review focused on subcontractor management and information it has so far received, outlining improvements and mandatory training in asbestos management that contractors and subcontractors need to do before they return to work, otherwise they will not retain their supplier relationship with the telco.

It is also recruiting inspectors and quality specialists, which could reach to 200 as NBN volumes increase.

All field staff will also be equipped with supplies for safe asbestos handling including signage, barricades, suits, masks, ground cover, removal bags, water supplies and recording equipment.

"We will continue to be open about the status of these issues and the work we are doing to strengthen contractor management of asbestos handling. We will not allow recommencement of cement pit remediation work until we are satisfied the necessary safety measures are in place," Telstra COO, Brendon Riley, said.
