BSkyB and Microsoft back new 'white space' spectrum organisation

Preparing for the M2M boom

BSkyB and Microsoft are among 23 organisations from around the world to form the Dynamic Spectrum Organisation to promote improved spectrum management and help develop new wireless technologies.

The Dynamic Spectrum Alliance said it will focus on "inefficiently used" radio frequencies, known as "white spaces" spectrum, including unused TV band frequencies.

Communications regulator Ofcom last year revealed plans to bring white space enabled devices to the UK. Use of white spaces would allow devices to transmit and receive wireless signals for applications such as broadband access for rural communities or machine-to-machine networks.

Also last year, the government was reportedly (http://www.computerworlduk.com/news/mobile-wireless/3409086/government-in-talks-with-microsoft-google-over-white-spaces/) in "detailed discussions" with both Microsoft and Google about the tech giants acquiring licences for unused white space spectrum.

The new Alliance said it will promote laws and regulations to ensure that spectrum technology can extend rural broadband, support the development of "smart cities", and "help ensure that consumers and their devices have wireless bandwidth when and where they need it".

The Alliance believes that many problems can be "alleviated" through spectrum sharing. The Alliance says it is "technology neutral" and will support a variety of standards-based and proprietary technologies "that will lower barriers to entry and increase technical and business model innovation".

More members for the Alliance are also being sought.
