M2 aids e-governance program for senior citizens

Telecommunications service provider and part of the M2 Telecommunications Group (ASX: MTU), iPrimus, has helped in the delivery of a digital local government program alongside the City of Whittlesea.

The Digital Local Government Program is an online 'virtual village' service for senior citizens in the NBN enabled area and was designed and implemented by City of Whittlesea.

Through its iPrimus brand, M2 delivered the 100/40 Mbps NBN connection that hosted the high definition video conferencing and online Seniors Resource Centre portal.

The company said, in a statement, that this technology will be used by City of Whittlesea to better equip nursing homes in the area to deliver virtual services directly into NBN connected homes.

Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, inaugurated the Digital Local Government Program in South Morang, Victoria, with a demonstration that included the interactive broadcast of a seniors exercise class televised from the South Morang Civic Centre to an audience at Mill Park Library Digital Hub.

Conroy also officially opened the new NBN-enabled Digital Hub at Mill Park Library, for which iPrimus is delivering several 100/40 Mbps connections.

M2 Telecommunications CEO, Geoff Horth, said the program intends to reduce social isolation whilst improving access to information and enhancing service delivery to the elderly.

"We are delighted to see the connection being utilised for a beneficial program in a potentially isolated community. The demonstration delivered today highlights the technological advancements brought about by the NBN, particularly showcasing the power of online social connectedness for senior citizens," he said.

Horth added that the launch reinforces M2's commitment to the accelerated roll-out of its fibre offering in South Morang and across Australia.
