Cisco incorporates Etherstack LTE smartphone technology

Cisco has incorporated wireless technology vendor, Etherstack's (ASX: ESK) LTE25 smartphone technology in a range of new interoperable communications capabilities for its wireless communications offerings. The Cisco and Etherstack solution will enable secure push-to-talk style operation between 3G and 4G handset devices and government radio systems. The offering also provides a similar capability to the utility, transportation and mining sectors, Cisco said in a statement.

The solution aims to solve key migration issues from legacy analogue networks to digital radio networks and broadband wireless networks.

"Government agencies will benefit from a solution that solves an intractable communications problem - how to transition from isolated legacy narrowband networks to 4G, while providing a unified user experience across network types," Etherstack CEO, David Deacon, said.

Cisco mentioned that the announcement will strengthen its position as a possible vendor to the rollout of FirstNet, a $US7 billion LTE public safety network in the US, funded by the US Department of Homeland Security. The shipments of product incorporating the Etherstack technology will commence in the US and Australia in the second quarter of this year.
