Dehydrated and desperately searching for water, I wandered into the Las Vegas Hotel and Casino to escape the hot desert sun. There, I ran into Toshiba's components gang who--after bribing me with several bottles of Arrowhead--sat me down to show off its new TransferJet technology.
Much like Wi-Fi Direct or NFC, TransferJet lets you transfer data between devices simply by tapping them together. What makes TransferJet standout, however, is that it can send files at a rate of 375 Mbps--1000 times faster than NFC. It's so fast that you can transfer 20 full resolution photos in a matter of seconds, and a 5GB video file in less than a minute.
TransferJet is an open standard, meaning any company can implement it, and there are adaptors available that will let you take advantage of the technology without having to buy all new hardware. Toshiba believes that everything, including tablets, laptops, cameras, and even TVs, could benefit from TransferJet.
Data transfer protocols may not be the sexiest of topics, but technologies like TransferJet bring us a step closer to living in a truly wireless world.
