Cheshire Fire and Rescue deploys PSN network

The voice and data network links all fire stations and offices throughout the county

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) has gone live with a new Public Services Network (PSN)-compliant WAN to aid collaboration across the county with its public sector partners.

The voice and data network links all fire stations and offices throughout the county. The WAN, provided by Updata, allows files to be transferred 60 times faster than the old network, said CFRS.

The new network is built to PSN accredited standards, meaning that CFRS can connect with other public sector stakeholders in the county and beyond, and can also take advantage of services offered through the government's Cloud Store programme.

The multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) network is designed to provide improved network performance and will be maintained by Updata on an ongoing basis.

Tim Bevington, head of planning, performance and communications at Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, said, "We place great emphasis on collaboration with our public sector partners and want to ensure that our network can support this going forward."

Updata, which classes itself as an SME, recently hit out at the difficulty of procurement at the local government level, claiming that despite the right noises being made in the Cabinet Office it is still an unwieldy process for SMEs.
