Vocus begins partial phase out of Maxnet name

Vocus Communications (ASX: VOC) has decided to partly rebrand its recent acquisition, New Zealand IT services firm Maxnet, under the Vocus banner.

From 27 August 2012, Maxnet's two data centres and website will be changed to Vocus but the NZ retail ISP business will continue to trade as Maxnet.

Cloud Storage - Comparison of 30 Services

Vocus Communications chief executive, James Spenceley, told Computerworld Australia that this was due to the "thousands of subscribers" who use Maxnet email addresses.

"It was far simpler to keep the name rather than have people worrying that they were going to lose their email address. It's a commitment to the brand that people signed up to," he said.

Spenceley added that Vocus hired four new NZ staff since the acquisition to work in network operations and support services.

"We're outsourcing our network support services from Australia to Auckland, New Zealand so we anticipate staff levels will increase because of that," he said.

"This is because we like the skill sets in Maxnet and we think there is opportunity to find the skills we require in Auckland. "

He added that a number of Australian-based telecommunications and ISP customers had started using the company's NZ data centres since the acquisition in June this year. Spenceley was not able to name any of the customers as yet.

In addition, NZ-based Jade Software signed a data centre contract in mid-August with Vocus while Konica Minolta, an existing Maxnet customer, is due to host its cloud document management service with the company within the next fortnight.
