Everything Everywhere selects Morgan Stanley to sell spectrum

The 1800MHz spectrum may be used by other operators to sell 4G services

Mobile network operator Everything Everywhere (EE) has selected financial services firm Morgan Stanley to assist it with the sale of its 1800Mhz spectrum.

The sale is being forced by communications regulator Ofcom as part of the merger between T-Mobile and Orange, which came together to become the UK's largest operator in 2010.

The company has said that the sale will take place by the end of the year, before Ofcom's much anticipated auction of the 800Mhz and 2.6Ghz spectrum that will be used for 4G networks.

"Following a competitive process, Morgan Stanley has been appointed to provide independent professional advice on the sale of some of the company's 1800MHz spectrum," said an EE spokesperson.

"The intention is to complete the sale of the spectrum in advance of the Combined Spectrum Award, currently scheduled to take place in Q4 2012."

This spectrum could potentially be used by other operators for 4G services, following the news that EE has asked Ofcom to liberalise the 1800Mhz band for use on next generation LTE networks.

EE has said that providing it gains approval from the regulator it could be offering 4G to UK customers by the end of the year.

However, despite initially showing support for EE's plans, Ofcom has had to delay its consultation into how it would impact competition in the market following objections from the UK's other mobile operators.

The deadline for stakeholders to submit their objections to the regulator is now 8 May 2012.
