ASUS confirms that Google's next mobile OS will be Android 5.0 Jelly Bean

Could be first with upgrades

ASUS has let slip that Google's next version of its mobile operating system will be named Android 5.0 Jelly Bean.

Although no devices have been announced with Jelly Bean, ASUS claims that it will be the first to upgrade its devices. Although it doesn't hint at when it will arrive, ASUS says it's in a good position because of a close relationship with Google.

Benson Lin, corporate vice president at ASUS told TechRadar, "Asus is very close to Google, so once they haveAndroid 5.0 I think there will be a high possibility that we will be the first wave to offer the Jelly Bean update."

It's been thought for a long time that the fifth full version of Android will be called Jelly Bean but this is the first time it's come from one of the big vendors. It's easy to make guesses at the codename since they come in alphabetical order and are all named after sweet food treats.

At Mobile World Congress (MWC) last week ASUS announced a number of devices including the PadFone which is a 3-in-1 combo of a smartphone, tablet and notebook.

ASUS did recently release Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for its Transformer TF101 tablet so it could well be the first with 5.0 Jelly Bean for smartphones and tablets.
