Akamai acquires mobile, cloud traffic optimizer Cotendo

The compnay sees new oppurtunities as mobile and cloud traffic volumes grow

Akamai Technologies has acquired Cotendo is a bid to become better at speeding up enterprise cloud and mobile traffic, the companies said on Thursday.

Akamai is paying about US$268 million in cash, according to a joint statement.

Today, Akamai's caching platform is used to help deliver between 15 percent and 30 percent of all Web traffic. The acquisition of Cotendo will allow it to offer services to enterprises that are moving to the cloud and are looking to make more applications accessible from mobile devices.

For example, Cotendo's mobile CDN (Content Delivery Network) takes into account device capabilities (including screen size), changing network conditions and geolocation data as it decides how to best deliver data traffic to a specific smartphone.

The company also offers the Cloudlet platform, which is used to optimize cloud traffic.

Akamai didn't provide any details on how it plans to integrate Cotendo's technology into its existing offerings, and what will happen to Cotendo's existing products.

Cotendo was founded in 2008 and is based in Sunnyvale, California, with a technology center in Israel.  The company has about 100 employees, with over 50 based in Israel.

The acquisition is expected to close in the first half of 2012.
