ITV tunes in to 10Gb fibre optic network

BULLETIN: Broadcaster driving online delivery improvement

Broadcaster ITV is deploying a fibre optic network between its key data centres in a bid to improve online content delivery.

The company has brought in Geo Networks to connect its Slough and Greenwich data centres with a 10 Gigabit fibre optic network, which can be scaled later to terabit capacity if required. ITV will use the network to deliver richer content with fewer interruptions.

The move is part of ITV's Transformation Plan, launched last August, under which the broadcaster said it was attempting to "drive new revenue streams by exploiting our content across multiple platforms".

"Over the past decade ITV has seen its core proposition of free-to-air broadcasting steadily eroded by changes in technology and through the creation of new content and distribution channels," it said at the time.

By using a dedicated fibre network, ITV expects a sub-2ms round trip time between sites.

Andrew Ioannou, a director of strategy at ITV, said today that a "robust network that eliminated single points of failure and reduced our business risk to its lowest possible level" was "critical" to the broadcaster.
