Intel plans to challenge Bluetooth short-range wireless spec with a new wireless technology called Wi-Fi PAN.
The technology, which was developed by Ozmo Devices, will allow peripherals including wireless headsets, keyboards and mice to be connected to laptops and mobile phones through a standard Wi-Fi network, removing the need for a separate Bluetooth antenna.
Ozmo Devices said Wi-Fi PAN operates at a similar nine-metre range to Bluetooth but claims data transfer rates are three times faster 9Mb per sec.
Wi-Fi PAN is expected to be made available to consumers next year.
