Samsung has demonstrated wireless technology that delivers 1Gbps (gigabits per second) to stationary clients, and 100 Mbps (megabits per second) to clients moving at up to 70mph.

In the demo, a bus travelled at 37mph while the technology delivered video on demand, a live broadcast and internet access simultaneously. The press release did not specify how it was achieved.

The company has promised the technology – in which it has invested $100m (about £53m) – will be in handsets by the end of 2008, and in commercial services by 2010, but it is not clear how it will be offered through products and standards. The quoted speeds are roughly 50 times greater than those of mobile WiMax.

Samsung also claimed 3.5Gbps to a device moving at 5kmph in a lab test.
