Samsung will launch the latest mobile phone in its Ultra edition range this week, with the new 'Soul' handset going on sale in the UK, France and Germany.
The phone is a slider-type handset that has an eye-catching touch panel under the display. The panel displays navigation icons that change according to the current application being run on the handset. For example, in camera mode, icons such as zoom and brightness appear, while music player functions appear in music mode.
The tri-band GSM and single-band WCDMA phone supports data downloads of up to 7.2Mbps over HSDPA networks and also has Bluetooth 2.0 wireless networking. Other features include a 5-megapixel camera with face detection and image stabiliser, FM radio with RDS (radio data system) and a music system based on technology from Bang & Olufsen. It costs around €400 (£320).
Samsung's Ultra edition range, with an emphasis on thinness, has proved a hit with consumers. The company sold 4.5 million of the handsets in the last three months of 2007 representing about a tenth of its overall sales of 46.3 million mobile phones, which is up 41 percent on the last quarter of 2006.
The Ultra range was launched in mid-2006 with three phones and has gone through several revisions since then. Despite its success Samsung said the Soul handset will be the last in the range. There are no details yet on a successor to Ultra.
