The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has slammed a TV commercial which shows a woman using a mobile phone while driving.

According to the watchdog, the sequence of images during the LG Electronics advert implied the woman had been using her mobile phone at the wheel of her car could be perceived as condoning the use of mobile phones while driving.

Advertising clearance centre Clearcast, originally approved the ad as the woman's hands were clearly on the steering wheel before and after the cut-away to the phone but, following 33 complaints, the ASA ruled that the advert breached the health-and-safety clause of the broadcasting code and should not be shown again in its original form.

LG said the woman was not using a mobile phone in the traffic jam, but simply imagining what she could have been doing if not stuck in traffic.
