Users who already think paying £159 for a Google Nexus 7 or Amazon Fire HD tablet is a bit much might want to consider this deal from The Times newspaper.

Readers who take out an 18-month subscription to The Times will throw in a 32GB Google Nexus 7 tablet (worth £199) for just £50. The subscription to The Times Digital Pack subscription costs £17.33 per month, but provides access to the newspapers web and mobile app content.

It's a novel approach, and we'd be interested to see how many new customers it attracts to The Times (which famously lost two-thirds of its readers when it turned on the Paywall on its website). The overall cost of the Android tablet plus the 18-month subscription is £361.94 (far more than the £199 of the tablet) so it doesn't seem like a great deal unless you're desperately interested in The Times. Alternatively, The Times is offering the whole deal for an upfront payment of £299.

What might be more interesting is for subscribers to The Times print newspaper, who might use it as a means to transfer from a print subscription to a digital subscription, saving themselves some of the price of a tablet.
