Nokia to open research centre in China

New research into wireless and mobile web

Nokia will open its first research centre in Asia in partnership with a Chinese university, the company said on Monday.

Nokia and Tsinghua University in Beijing will develop wireless technologies, hardware and mobile-based internet services. The centre will employ 20 company researchers, part of the Nokia Research Center, as well as 30 professors and up to 50 students from the university.

Nokia said the partnership is part of a company strategy to broaden its long-term research efforts on mobile technologies with universities, international organisations and other large companies.

Nokia Research Center, which employs around 800 people, also has facilities in the US, Germany, Japan and the UK.

China, which has more than 480 million mobile subscribers, has an increasing number of engineering graduates every year that represents a large talent pool, Nokia said.
