Apple plans beyond iPhone touchscreen

Patent reveals Apple's targeting tablets & PDAs

A patent filed by Apple hints that the company will feature touch screen controls on more devices besides the iPhone.

The patent application mentions a device with a cursor that’s controlled through manipulation of the back-side touch-surface. The position of the cursor is identified when the user’s finger makes contact with the back surface.

As the back of the device is used for control purposes, the front would be used to display information. The patent also states that the device “may be operated with a single hand, wherein cursor movement and control element selection may be accomplished without lifting one’s finger”.

Earlier this year Apple announced that touch sensitive control would feature in the iPhone. In this more recent patent application the company has stated that the touch sensitive input may be implemented in tablet computers, mobile phones, PDAs and portable video and audio players.
