CeBIT: Toshiba adds Windows smartphones

Windows Mobile handsets coming to the UK

Toshiba has launched a “complete new strategy” to attack the smartphone market in Europe, showing off two new handsets at CeBIT that are designed for business and consumer customers.

The company said its handsets have a fairly large presence in Japan, but it's so far failed to take Europe by storm. However, the Portege G500 and G900, launching in April and May respectively, could change that.

The G500 is a Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone with a 3in screen and a 2-megapixel camera. It supports HSDPA, Wi-Fi and EDGE wireless technologies and includes a slide-out keypad.

The G900 offers Windows Mobile 6.0, announced by Microsoft just last month, has a 2.3in screen, supports the same wireless standards as the G500 and also features a 2-megapixel camera.

“These phones mark a complete new strategy for us,” said a spokesperson on the Toshiba stand. “We're going to become much bigger in the European smartphone market.”
