Mobiles named one of worst inventions

Device comes close second to nuclear weapons

Mobile phones are one of the worst inventions ever, a new BBC survey has found.

The BBC’s Focus magazine’s poll of over 4,000 people revealed that mobiles came second only to weapons including explosives, guns and atomic bombs, as the world's worst breakthroughs. The top ten was collated using answers given by surfers visiting the Radio Times’ website.

The joint third-worst inventions were nuclear power, the three-wheeled Sinclair C5 vehicle and television, each of which received 9 percent. Religion even made an appearance in tenth position, taking 2 percent of the vote.

Paul Parsons, editor of BBC Focus magazine, was fascinated at how “technologies and ‘objects of desire’ that seem to play an important and integral part in our lives may not in fact be pleasing the masses”.
