Samsung Z confirmed as flagship Tizen smartphone: Leaves Android aside

Samsung has announced details of its first Tizen-powered smartphone called the Samsung Z. See also: The 27 best smartphones: The best phone you can buy in 2014.

After launching its range of Gear smartwatches, the Samsung Z will be the first smartphone to run on the firm's own Tizen operating system – not Android. "Samsung is committed to enhancing the mobile experience of consumers with innovation that is both personal and unique to their needs," said DJ Lee, president of mobile at Samsung. "The Samsung Z integrates the power and adaptability of the Tizen platform, enabling users to browse the web faster and utilize applications more effectively."  

The Samsung Z itself features a 4.8in Super AMOLED 720p screen and a 2.3GHz quad-core processor. It also has an 8Mp rear camera and support for 4G LTE networks. See also: iPhone 6 release date, price, specs and new features.

Running on Tizen version 2.2.1, Samsung says the new operating system offers optimal performance and improved memory management – this means quick start-up times and 'immediate' multi-tasking. The firm also touts smoother scrolling and better web browsing. Compared to what, we don't know.

The home screen features a 'distinctive' layout creating easy access to favourite features and apps, according to Samsung. Users will be able to download apps from the Tizen Store. ReadSamsung to 'incentivise' app developers to create HTML5 apps for its Tizen smartphone.

The Samsung Z will be on show at the Tizen Developer Conference in San Francisco tomorrow, 3 June. If you're wondering when you can get your hands on one then it will be launching first in Russia during the third quarter. It's planned to expand to other markets but no release date information is available yet.
