LG says that a Quad HD smartphone will launch later this year.

With 4K, or Ultra HD, TVs launching to market LG has said we will see similar technology arrive in the smartphone market later this year. See also: LG G3 release date, price, specs and new features 2014.

At Mercedes-Benz World in Weybridge, LG showed off its latest OLED curved TV and its soon to be launched 2014 4K sets (which by the way will start at under £2,000). They look great and we might not have to wait long before we have a look at a QHD smartphone.

Speaking at the showcase event, Andrew Coughlin, head of mobile at LG UK, confirmed to PC Advisor that we should expect see a QHD smartphone in the second half of 2014.

It seems likely that LG will be the first to do so since its LG Display department announced a 5.5in 1440 x 2560 panel last August, around the time LG launched the G2 smartphone.

That's great news considering the flagship launches we've seen so far this year – the Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One M8 and Sony Xperia Z2 – have all stuck to Full HD resolution.

Whether we need QHD resolution on a smartphone sized screen is debatable but we're keen to find out – a pixel density of 538ppi is huge. Coughlin says that the key is video.

With services like Netflix launching 4K streaming at the moment and smartphones now able to record 4K video from the main camera.
