It's been more than a year since HTC launched its popular and well received HTC One smartphone, but when will the new HTC One 2 be released? We take a look at the All New HTC One (M8) release date, price, specs and features. See also: Galaxy S5 vs HTC M8 2014 smartphone comparison review.
HTC One 2 'M8': Release date and name
Mobile World Congress (MWC), the smartphone and tablet focused tech show, is just a matter of days away and for a while seemed like a great time and place for HTC to announce its new flagship smartphone.
However, the firm has scheduled a launch event for 25 March in London where it is expected to reveal the successor to the HTC One. It tweeted "The best is about to get better" along with a save the date image.
That's all the information available at the moment but we don't need any more to be confident this is when the HTC One 2 will arrive. It's the name of the device which is slightly more in the balance.
The phone's codename is 'M8' but this won't be used in the final product name and 'HTC One 2' sounds like someone checking a microphone. The firm could use a '+' on the end like it did with the HTC One X or perhaps a '2014' tag to signify its newness. The suggestion from evleaks is that the device will be called 'The All New One'. And this is backed up by a leaked brochure (See specs section).
We'll be at the London event on 25 March so make sure you join us for all the news as it happens.
Mobile networks Three and Vodafone have both confirmed they will be selling the new HTC One smartphone. Vodafone simply states it will stock HTC's 'next flagship smartphone' while Three said: "HTC will announce their all new HTC One (M8) on 25th March 2014. Save the date and come back to us to find out when you can get your hands on one."
HTC One 2 'M8': Price
Price is one thing which hasn't been revealed ahead of the M8's launch so we're speculating here and feel free to make your predictions in the comments section below.
The successor to the HTC One will be a premium high-end device, so we expect it will gain an appropriately matched price tag. The original started at around the £500 mark, SIM-free, and quickly dropped lower to a very reasonable £450.
We're going to put our bet on the £550 mark for the 'The All New One' and we'll see if we're correct.
HTC One 2 'M8': Specs and features
There have been plenty of leaked details surrounding the M8 including that it will be the first HTC device to use on-screen buttons. Rumoured specifications include a 5in Full HD screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor and Android 4.4 KitKat.
It's unclear exactly how HTC is going to utilise two camera sensors, though. It could possibly mean Lytro-style post photo taking refocusing or maybe improved low-light performance. Let us know your thoughts below. It has a dual-tone looking LED flash similar to that of the iPhone 5s.
Courtesy of GSM Arena, we have an explanation of the dual-camera setup. The site got hold of Australian network, Telstra's brochure which details the smartphone.
It states that the 'Duo Camera' will allow users to "create vivid images even in low light and professionally edit memories after you've taken the shot. Choose where to focus, highlight what you love, soften backgrounds and add 3D effects."
The brochure also reveals that the All New HTC One will have a slightly larger 5in Full HD screen, HTC BoomSound and HTC Sense 6.0. Based on the leaked image below, the BlinkFeed software will carry on behind the app tray and navigation buttons which have moved on-screen.
A few leaked photos have appeared on the internet over the last few weeks showing the device and now we've got the first official shot from evleaks showing the device in a pale gold colour. It will also arrive in silver and grey.
All New HTC One mini
Keeping in line with its current offering, HTC will launch a mini version of the M8, according to evleaks. It will supposedly feature a 4.5in 720p screen, 13Mp camera, and a Snapdragon 400 processor.
Evleaks has also revealed an interesting case for the new HTC One which shows the time and weather (at least) with colourful LEDs. The case will also be available in green, red and blue versions.
All New HTC One Google Play edition
Furthermore, the notorious Twitter leaker has suggested that the M8 will come in a Google Play edition like its predecessor meaning it will come with stock Android rather than with HTC's Sense overlay,
