Windows Phone 8.1 update will bring notification centre called Action Center

Microsoft to bring Action Center for Windows Phone users

Windows Phone 8.1 Action Center

An update to Windows Phone 8.1, aka Blue, will bring users a much needed notification centre.

The feature has been a long time coming and something iOS and Android users have been used to for a while with the Control Centre and drop down notification bar respectively. Winphollowers has published screenshots of the upcoming interface which Microsoft calls the 'Action Center'. See also: 11 best Windows Phones.

The Verge has confirmed that the screenshots are genuinely Windows 8.1. The Action Center will allow users to control messages and notifications. It will no doubt receive a warm welcome from the increasing number of Windows Phone users.

A short swipe from the top of the screen will reveal the Action Center in part, providing four settings: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane and Driving. These are customisable and the screen also displays the battery percentage and date.

A longer swipe will open the Action Center in full. Here messages, missed calls and notifications are collected awaiting action from the user. Microsoft's slide states the notifications can be 'intelligently managed' by apps, silently adding, updating and deleting them.

There are further buttons to clear all notifications or to navigate to all settings.

Windows Phone 8.1 volume controls

A small but handy addition will be multiple volume controls. Microsoft has decided to split the controls for ringer/notifications and apps/media. The firm is also building its own personal assistant into Windows 8.1 called 'Cortana'. It will be powered by, among others, Foursquare and Bing.

Microsoft is expected to announce the Windows 8.1 features at its Build 2014 conference in April where it could also be detailing Windows 9.
