LG announces G2 smartphone ahead of launch, drops Optimus name

LG G2 will be first of 'premium' range of smartphones

LG G2 smartphone teaser

LG has decided to announce details of its G2 smartphone ahead of its launch on 7 August in New York.

The Korean electronics manufacturer has dropped the 'Optimus' branding from its new range of smartphones. The LG G2 will be the first of what the firm describes as the new 'G' premium brand.

To be clear on the G and Optimus brands, LG said: "Future smartphones in the same series will carry only the G name while the branding of mobile devices that have already been introduced will continue unchanged."

Unfortunately the news is a bit of a teaser as LG has decided not to announce any specifications for the G2 smartphone or give a look at the device. Last month it announced that the G series would come equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor so we know that much for sure. See also: LG Optimus G review.

"Our vision is to make LG’s newest G devices synonymous with excellence, raising the bar even further for the ultimate in user experience," said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of the LG Mobile. "The new G2 will build upon the excellent reputation established by previous G Series products."

Leaked information about the LG G2 suggests that it will look similar to the Samsung Galaxy S4 but with volume controls on the rear side. It will allegedly come with a 5.5in Full HD screen, 2GB of RAM, a 13Mp camera and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

We fully expect LG to unveil and give full specs and maybe price for the G2 on 7 August in New York when we'll bring you full coverage.
