Dead tablet walking: No more big updates coming for the BlackBerry Playbook

Not only is the Playbook not getting a BB10 port, it's not getting anything.

The hits just keep on coming for BlackBerry Playbook owners.

Mere weeks after BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins pounded a nail into the moribund tablet's coffin by reneging on an earlier promise to port the BB10 operating system over to the slate, the company's VP of developer relations announced on Twitter that the slate won't be receiving any more significant updates whatsoever.

When developers asked whether the Playbook could possibly see any sort of significant update to the slate, VP Alec Saunders firmly shot down the prospect. This was no wishy-washy PR-speak denial, either; it was a firm no.

Pressed even further, Saunders said that developers would be disappointed if BlackBerry did decide to port some of the operating system's features over to the Playbook. "Playbook doesn't have the capabilities to run BB10 acceptably," he said, echoing what CEO Heins said when the BB10 port was officially killed.

At the time, Heins also said the company would "support PlayBook on the existing software platforms and configurations." It appears he meant that literally.

While the decision to cut its losses on the lackluster Playbook is a sound one for the company-- RIM is struggling mightily and doesn't even believe in the future of the tablet--the news no doubt comes as a blow to faithful BlackBerry fans. We suggest giving your dead tablet one final hug and checking out TechHive's list of top tablets.
