Sainsbury's to launch mobile phone network with Vodafone

Sainsbury's has announced that it will launch its own mobile network using Vodafone's infrastructure.

Following in the footsteps of a major rival, Tesco Mobile which uses O2's network, the supermarket will offer a virtual network in partnership with Vodafone. 'Mobile by Sainsbury's' will launch "later this summer", according to the firm.

"We’re extremely pleased to be working with Vodafone and look forward to developing a range of mobile products and services that will take the stress out of purchasing decisions in a familiar environment, offering what’s right for them whatever their needs may be." said Luke Jensen, Group Development director at Sainsbury’s.

A full range of products and pricing will be announced at launch later this summer. Mobile by Sainsbury's "will reward customer loyalty, offer great quality value-for-money mobile products together with attractive offers."

Customers will also be also to collect Nectar points, too. It's unclear whether Nectar points will be able to be spent on new phones or tariffs. We also don't know whether 4G will be on offer or not. See also: Samsung to launch 5G by 2020.

The news comes as Three announced a new basic Pay As You Go 'game changer' deal. New and existing customers can get calls for 3p a minute, text messages at 2p each and 1p per MB of internet.

Thomas Malleschitz, marketing director at Three, said: "The number of complex Pay As You Go tariffs, Add-ons and options available is mindboggling. Consumers are forced into choosing where they want best value – whether that’s calls, texts or internet. Our new rates strip things right back to basics with a simple, clear and transparent rate for calls, texts and internet use that offers clear value across the board."
