Sony has taken the wraps off its latest smartphone, the Xperia Z Ultra so here's what you need to know about its release date, price and specs in the UK. See also: Sony Xperia Z Ultra preview.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra: Release date

Sony has said the Xperia Z Ultra will launch in the third quarter globally. Online smartphone retailer Clove has said that first stock is expected to arrive in September. When a specific release date is announced we'll let you know.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra: Price in the UK

As well as the expected release date, Clove has pegged the price of the Xperia Z Ultra at £599 inc VAT. This could change between now and when the device goes on sale though.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra: Specs

With a huge 6.4in Full HD screen, we need to call the Xperia Z Ultra a phablet rather than a smartphone. A bigger version of the existing Xperia Z, Sony is calling the Ultra the world’s slimmest and largest Full HD smartphone – it's just 6.5mm thick. "The Xperia Z Ultra is the most exciting revolution in large-screen smartphone entertainment devices with both the slimmest and largest Full HD smartphone display in the world that is second to none." said Calum MacDougall, Director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile.

Apart from being huge and Full HD (1080x1920), the Ultra's screen comes with 'Triluminos' technology which Sony says 'creates a wider palette of rich natural colours'.

Its phablet size means that the Xperia Z Ultra takes on devices like Samsung's Galaxy Note 2 and quite possibly the Galaxy Note 3, not forgetting the Galaxy Mega. See also: Samsung Galaxy S4 mini hands-on review.

Like its smaller brother, the Xperia Z Ultra is waterproof and dustproof. It runs on a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, the world’s fastest smartphone processor, according to Sony and verified by Strategy Analytics.

Other specs include an 8Mp camera with Sony's Exmor RS sensor, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, 16GB of internal storage, NFC and 4G LTE mobile connectivity.

Sony also announced the second version of its smart watch; surprisingly it's called the SmartWatch 2.
